Fall 2013 Watercolors

Below is a painting I finished in November. It is of a watercolor artist in Melbourne, Australia. It looks like he is looking for a spot to paint. I saw this scene at the end of a watercolor video. The location looks just like a hill just outside Kangaroo Ground where we used to live years ago. In the background, off in the distance, are the Dandenongs (a mountain range east of Melbourne).

This my latest painting in October. My wife wanted me to paint it and I didn't. Well one day I painted it and starting getting into it. I have gotten a lot of response from this painting on Facebook. It will be in my 2014 calendar which I sell very year.

The painting below I actually started in 2010. I finally finished it two weeks ago. It will be on the cover of my 2014 calendar which will be available on Etsy this year. My vendor name on easy.com is kenharris1.

Paintings From Summer 2013

Below are paintings I have done during the last couple of weeks of this summer 2013. The immediate painting below is the last painting I did this summer. It is of Boulevard Diderot in Paris. The next painting I did on location in Switzerland. We were up in the mountains and you could see the Alps off in the distant. Although I live in California and have seen high mountains in the Eastern Sierras, I also appreciate the Alps because of their own unique beauty. Click on any image to see a larger view.

The painting below is Boulevard Diderot in Paris at sunset.
This is a view based on a photo I took from the window of my hotel room.

The painting below is a study for a larger painting I plan to do. It is in Crystal Cove state park in Orange County, CA. Part of the movie "Beaches" was filmed in this cottage.

This painting I did one morning in Newport Beach, CA before I went to work.

This painting is from a photo I took in Paris this summer while walking across a bridge over the Seine.

Below is a sketch I did of a person walking in Regents Park in London

This is also a sketch of a woman leaving the Metro in Paris on a rainy day. I shot the photo from my hotel room like the street scene above.

Below is Notre Dame in the rain.

This is a street in the town where Versaille is located. Click on image to see a larger view.

From My Sketchbook

Keeping a sketchbook is a habit — It is like keeping a journal. It is a good thing. In a sketchbook one expresses himself with out much inhibition. The top drawing is Newport Beach, CA, the bottom is a fountain in Provence.

Paintings

This is a painting I did as a demonstration for my students. If you are interested in any of these paintings, email me at ken@kenharris.com.

This is a watercolor portrait study I did from a painting done by another artist. I am sorry but I do not remember who the artist is. The original was in oil. I did it in watercolor. The value of copying other artist is that you learn from them. Also they have all the values and colors worked out. Garage bands including the Beatles, when starting out, played other people's music. It is a great way to learn. The idea is to draw and paint.

This painting is called Going to Work. It supposed to have the feel of an early summer morning. It is quiet and still cool. One is alone with his thoughts. It is a street scene from Provence. This painting is now hanging on a wall in the UK.

This is an acrylic painting I did of low tide at Morro Bay. This view is from the small village of Los Osos located on the central coast of California. I did the painting from a photo I took early in the morning.

I painted the above painting from a photo I took last July when we were at Los Osos. It is the small hotel we stayed at. If you continue to walk to the left of the hotel you will see the view depicted in the painting above.

The painting I did of the church is a drawing partly from my imagination.

A watercolor from a photo I took in Balboa Park in the city of San Diego, California. A nice place to go. Click on photo to see a bigger image.

These are brown pelicans. They live at the beaches and bays of the southern California coast. This was part of a triptych commission I completed. A triptych is a series of three paintings that are of the same theme or subject. They work together to create one piece of art or statement.

Painting on Location

I painted this when I was in Alabama. I saw the light striking the trees on the ridge in the distance. The sun was quickly setting so I didn't get what I started to paint. That is generally how it is though when you paint. Click on image to see larger size.

I started painting this on location twice. The second time it worked. I think the first attempt is really learning about your subject. A failure tells you what not to do. So you try again and it usually works. Every once in a while you hit it on the first try.
